Leila investigates the social, political and historical aspects of ‘a place’ and continues to develop site-responsive installations using structures, video and sound. Recently awarded Arts Council funding, she is due to show a work named “Points of Departure,” at her work place in which she has been resident for the last year, the top floor of “The Queen of Bradgate” pub in Leicester. (Dates: 29:04:16 – 05:05:16) The work is likened to a walk through maze of wooden structures and monitors. Recorded music, sounds, past discussions and events that have taken place in the space over the last year are set on sensors causing an interaction with the visitor. This focuses on the changes in atmosphere and the non-commercial environment and explores the subject of ‘now’ in community. Leila is also director of Silver Vine Arts, a non profit, artist led, community interest organization. Silver Vine Arts organize exhibitions thoughtout the year, supporting local and national talent and coordinates Summer Art Trail, a ten-day contemporary visual arts festival that takes over the city of Leicester in August and is part of the City Festival. The trail is a network of 15 exhibitions and 30+ arts events across 18 venues that creates collaboration opportunities for other art organisations, employment and extensive training opportunities for young artists and graduates. leilahoustonart.weebly.com silvervinearts.wix.com/summerarttrail |
