VENICE: CONVERSATION SERIES III
Due to Houston's dyslexia and passion for collaboration, she has been exploring the concept of "Conversation" and how it can become a part of her work. In Venice: Conversation Series III, Houston broadens her consideration of the relationship between people, place, and history in this multi-layered work, exploring how communities can be shaped, empowered, fragmented, and distorted by the arrival of newcomers and their perspective of the city.
Building upon her previous video installations, which examine the essence of place, Venice: Conversation Series III features recorded discussions drawn from the heart of the Venetian community. The piece draws parallels between the issues in Italy and Houston's home in the UK, with discussions centered around cuts to public funding and their impact on society.
Using visuals that capture the fibers of Venice's environment, the work invites us to remember the truth of a setting that has been so embellished. Venice: Conversation Series III considers how the beauty, creativity, and authenticity of a place can survive when a place's economy threatens to become the place itself, rather than its foundation.
This film premiered at EMPIRE II, a major exhibition and immersive film hub at the 2017 Venice Biennale. The work reflects Houston's ongoing exploration of the power of conversation and its ability to shape and inform artistic expression, as well as its capacity to foster a sense of community and inclusivity in the artistic process.
